The ASBÜ Department of Sociology successfully hosted the sixth session of its "Sociology Seminars" series on December 19, 2025.
We were honored to welcome Dr. Zafer Büyükkeçeci from the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research as our keynote speaker. The seminar, titled "Quantitative Approaches to Studying Family Life Courses," took place at the Sezai Karakoç Hall in the ASBÜ Rectorate Building.
Exploring Family Dynamics Through Quantitative Lenses Dr. Büyükkeçeci’s presentation focused on how institutions such as welfare states and markets shape family life courses. Using advanced quantitative tools—specifically sequence analysis and fixed-effects models—he addressed critical issues including:
-
Inequality and heterogeneity within family structures,
-
The divergence of life trajectories over time,
-
The intersection of demographic trends and institutional frameworks.
The seminar provided a sophisticated methodological roadmap for our students and faculty, fostering an engaging academic dialogue on the future of demographic research in sociology.
