Ankara Social Sciences University’s (ASBU) Sociology Department recently concluded an 8-week RStudio workshop, which took place from July 10 to August 28, 2024. The workshop, facilitated by Research Assistant Ozan Çetiner, involved three master's students—Burak Ayar, Ömer Tahir Öztürk, and Sümeyye Elif Herdem—analyzing global migration trends from 2015 to 2019 using OECD data.

Our faculty member Prof. Dr. Sutay Yavuz shared his views in an interview with Anadolu Agency regarding the drop in Türkiye's fertility rate below the European Union average in 2023, and its lag behind the world average. Yavuz emphasized that this situation could lead to serious risks in the future, such as population aging, a decrease in the working-age population, and a direct decline in population. He stressed the importance of implementing various policies to increase fertility rates.
Prof. Dr. Şebnem Köşer Akçapar, has initiated her research on "Central Mediterranean Corridor and Irregular Migration" at the Universita degli Studi di Polermo, Italy as of July 15, 2024.
Talking to BBC Turkish, Prof. Dr. Sutay Yavuz, Population Scientist and Lecturer at Ankara Social Sciences University, states that TURKSTAT Address Based Population Registration System data will offer a generic idea about the population, however; it should be interpreted together with birth-death and migration statistics for clear results. Sociology Seminar (2023 Fall Semester) will be held on 26 December 2023 between 09:30 am - 12:30 pm at Fuat Sezgin Conference Hall. Having conducted their their studies within the scope of the “Research Project in Sociology” course by Prof. Dr. Şebnem Köşer Akçapar, our students will make their presentations. The seminar is open to the participation of faculty members and students from all departments.
Our Faculty Member Prof. Dr. Sutay Yavuz talked about the recent neighbor murders in Ankara in his interview with A Haber on November 28. In his statement, Prof. Dr. Sutay Yavuz emphasized the risks posed by individual armament and the need to take preventive measures in this regard. While discussing this event sociologically, he underlined that, the meaning of the house as a private space and the traditional understanding of the neighborhood culture has have changed especially after the pandemic.
