The article titled A Sociological Analysis of Suicide Cases in Ankara Province (2012–2023), prepared by faculty members of the Department of Sociology at Ankara Social Sciences University (ASBU), has been published. The study appears in Volume 13, Issue 1 (June 2025) of The Journal of Ankara Studies, a peer-reviewed journal published by Koç University’s Vehbi Koç Ankara Studies Research Center (VEKAM), which aims to support scholarly research on the urban components of Ankara without disciplinary or thematic limitations.

Co-authored by Research Assistant Ozan Çetiner, Research Assistant Ceylin Özyurt, and Professor Dr. Sutay Yavuz, this article is the result of nearly a year of meticulous academic work.

The study offers a comprehensive sociological analysis of suicide cases in Ankara by combining quantitative data and qualitative insights. Drawing on data from the 2012–2023 period, the research demonstrates significant differences in crude suicide rates based on settlement area, gender, age, marital status, and educational level. District-level analyses reveal that Altındağ and Çankaya have higher suicide rates compared to other districts in Ankara.

In-depth interviews conducted with police officers, as well as focus group discussions with social workers and psychologists working in Ankara, shed light on the social dynamics behind suicide. The findings emphasize that factors such as economic instability, masculinity crises, domestic violence, intergenerational conflict, and social isolation play significant roles within the context of urban life.

In addition to being one of the most comprehensive sociological studies on suicide cases in Ankara to date, the article also offers constructive critiques and recommendations concerning suicide registration systems and institutional intervention mechanisms.

We extend our sincere thanks to the Governorship of Ankara, the Ministry of Family and Social Services, the Ankara General Directorate of Security, and the Turkish Statistical Institute for their data support and collaboration. We also express our gratitude to the editors and editorial board of The Journal of Ankara Studies for their careful review process and valuable academic contributions.
